Catharsis Burning Man project, 2019

We all need… Catharsis. In October 2018 a group of friends in Seattle decided to make an art installation, featuring Petrykivka painting - traditional Ukrainian folk art style (dating from the 17th century) and bring it to Black Rock Desert in Nevada for Burning Man 2019. Back in a days, people in Ukraine believed that this art painted on outside walls of their houses will protect them from evil…

The idea to create a huge 11ft tall butterfly was born. We decided to place a real-size human heart model right in the middle of a butterfly as a reference to Franz Kafka’s novel “The Metamorphosis” - the story of salesman Gregor Samsa who wakes up one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect.

We call this installation Catharsis. The word means a process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. The work symbolizes that we all can change and reach our full potential. Before we finished building we asked people on the Internet to write us their dreams and we paced them inside of the wings together with my favorite 7 printed photographs that I took throughout the last 10 years of travel in Ukraine, Canada, Cayman Islands and the USA.

In this installation, we combined traditional cultural heritage Petrykivka and new tech. LED lights on the sides of the wings dynamically change its animation. The lights were programmed and installed by a team of our friends and IT professionals, who traveled to Seattle to build Catharsis butterfly from Ukraine, Thailand and The Netherlands. We made a 3D-printed real-size human heart that lights up. In the night time, it’s starting to shine from the inside together with glowing ultraviolet painting on the wing’s surface. This is the story of bringing Ukrainian cultural heritage to life.
